Move Your Office

I have a favorite spot where I do most of my work and affectionately call it my home office. It’s the kitchen table that has plenty of light, a great view of the backyard and proximity to the coffee pot.  The chair is plush with a high back and the dog is usually stretched out on the rug next to me.  I’m at my most comfortable here to brainstorm and write.

My real home office is down the hall with a large desk, studio lighting for zooms, the printer and two filing cabinets.  It’s where I record videos, take meetings and focus on deadline work.  I feel more urgent behind this desk.

Two different places with two very different vibes. But in this year of creating a new business, I’ve found the need for a third space.  I think of it as a community inspiration space.

When I worked in television I went to the station every day, did stories on location and interacted with all types of people.  I listened to conversations and felt energized by being with others.   There’s something about being out in the world that juices my creativity and gives me opportunity to see what other people are doing.

So, I make it a point to take my work on the road to coffee shops, my public library and co working spaces.  This picture is from BasBlue in Detroit, where I’m a member.  It’s a wonderfully inclusive community of professional women with programming, a beautiful house full of work space and a café open to the public. I bring my clients here, meet people for coffee and absorb new energy. (Shout out to my friend Ellen who is BasBlue’s fearless CEO!)

Rotating my home office keeps me inspired and connected.

Where could you take your work to change up your rhythm?
